"ATELIER" is a French word meaning an artist's studio or workshop...
I love language. I have always enjoyed learning new words, considering where they came from and trying to incorporate them into my vocabulary.
While not universally understood in North America, the word Atelier has found a home in many languages other than French. Since it is used and understood in Germany as if it were a German word, it was during my time at Violinmaking School in Mittenwald when I first imagined running a business named Violin Atelier Schmidt.
Back home in Canada, I wondered if the name Violin Atelier Schmidt might sound pretentious, when in fact I desire to create a business that is as welcoming and accessible as possible.
However, when I researched the origins of the word Atelier I simply could not resist!
... from the
Old French
"ASTELIER"
which
literally
means
"pile of
wood
chips"
Atelier is pronounced like "atelle-yay" .
